125th Anniversary News and Events

St. Monica's 125th

  Anniversary

"A Celebration of  125  Years of Ministry to

    the people of God"

The celebration has begun!  As we continue this year-long celebration, we invite you to bring your spirit-filled presence to each of the monthly events planned - or at least as many as you can attend. God has surely blessed us with a wonderful parish and a loving community!  --Please continue to gather any pictures or memorabilia that you may have stored away - do you have any pictures of your son/daughter's Baptism, First Communion or Confirmation from years ago? Were you married here - do you have any holiday pictures to share? All of these will be used for display throughout the year in the Rectory Meeting Room and at all future events -  drop them off at the Rectory.   All pictures should be labeled - they will be returned to you when our Celebration Year is over.

In continuation of the year-long celebration of our 125th Anniversary,

St. Monica's Parish Pig Roast was held on Sunday, June 4th, at St. Monica's church hall. Over 140 people attended this successful event!  The surprise came when Butch and Bonnie Osborn instructed the crowd to join in on the line dancing fun!  Money was raised to support St. Monica's Parish in New Orleans.

ICE CREAM SOCIAL
Parishoners gathered in our church hall to enjoy an Ice Cream Social on Sunday, July 16th, in continuation of celebrating 125 years as a parish. Over 150 people came to enjoy this event,  which was planned and coordinated by Camille Kornutick and JoAnn Horvath.  A special appearance by the Women's Barbershop Quartet "High Hopes" gave the day an old fashioned flavor.

ST. MONICA PARISH CELEBRATES FEAST DAY/ETHNIC FESTIVAL on Sunday, August 27th, 2006.

St. Monica's Parish in Sussex celebrated the Feast of St. Monica on Sunday, August 27, 2006 with a "Celebration of Ethnicity".  The parish has been preparing for this event for several months and invited the parishioners to share their ethnic background through foods, customs and traditions. Many countries were represented, including Poland, Germany, Russia, Italy, Sicily, Austria, Syria, Africa, Ireland, the United States and the Philppines. The celebration also included a "parade of saints" which were displayed throughout the Church.

As part of their spiritual preparation, the parish held a nine day Novena prior to the Feast Day, which included prayer and much historic information about St. Monica. Since she was from North Africa, the ethnic celebration included a very special performance by African drummer Maxwell Kofi Donkor and his group Sankofa. The musical performance was memorable and all enjoyed a good time.
